Get Bathing Suit Ready

Love handles can make an appearance on men and women alike. While men and women carry fat in the abdomen differently, the result is the same. The washboard stomach they long for has been thrown out with the water. The doctors at Illinois Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery can make a difference in the way your clothes fit and the confidence you have when you put on your favorite pair of skinny jeans or get ready to hit the pool in the summer.

What to Expect with Tummy Liposuction

Your physician will mark the area on your abdomen you wish to have sculpted. This varies for men and women. Men typically carry extra weight around the middle, creating a tire effect. Women carry extra fat in the lower abdomen, creating the ever-so-dreaded, hard-to-say-goodbye-to paunch. Your physician will then administer a local anesthesia to the area being worked on, or you may be put completely to sleep before the procedure with general anesthesia. Because liposuction on the abdomen is often a larger area, you will most likely be put completely to sleep for the procedure.

How Tummy Liposuction Works

A small tube called a cannula is inserted into the abdomen and the fat is sucked out through the tube. Tumescent fluid is often used to help expand the tissues and make the process of removing the fat easier. While incisions are necessary for this procedure, your physician will make them at the most inconspicuous spot – often the belly button – to ensure minimal scarring is visible.

Tummy Liposuction Results

As the tunnels where fat has been removed collapse, your abdomen will become more sculpted and start to resemble the washboard stomach you long for. This will progressively improve over the next three to six months. You may be asked to wear special compression garments such as a belly band to help aid this process. While this is a long-term solution, it is important to remember that fat can be gained back in these areas so proper diet and exercise is essential as you move forward.
